ART & DESIGN | 11 www.italchamind.eu Curatorial and Conservation departments have spent years studying the Virgin of the Rocks. New infrared reflectography and macro x-ray fluorescence (MA-XRF) maps have revealed two distinct compositions beneath the surface of the painting. Our show will reveal how the Virgin of the Rocks changed over time, and how Leonardo experimented and changed his mind while he was working on this commission. ICC: What is it about this Experience that will make it “quite unlike any exhibition” seen at the National Gallery before? LC: Technology can give us some fantastic ways of presenting the Gallery’s knowledge in an immersive experience. This experience is a major departure for the Gallery’s traditional displays, giving us the chance to demonstrate through moving image and projection mapping some of the many rich stories and themes about the painting. The spaces will be primarily visual and experiential, enabling visitors to step closer, and into these interpretations, with elements of interaction. It will revolutionise the experience of the Gallery’s exhibition spaces and offer a chance for visitors to move beyond the barrier. ICC: The National Gallery is gearing up to celebrate its bi-centenary anniversary in 2024. How important are projects like this in ensuring such an historic institution will continue to be relevant for generations to come? LC: Leonardo is a recognised artist across our audiences, as well as those who have not visited us before. This project aims to highlight the Gallery’s deep expert knowledge and attract new audiences through a fresh and interesting experience. It will act as an accessible entry point into complex ideas, whilst at the same time encouraging emotional engagement and new perspectives on many levels. This experience is spearheading the Gallery’s Digital Transformation. We need to continually explore new methods of interpretation and how technology can enrich the museum experience, presenting the Nation’s collection in the most accessible and thought-provoking way. · To find out about how your business can host events or get involved with the Gallery’s exhibition programme, please contact Corporate Development Manager at Lydia.Brightling-Reed@ng-london.org.uk or by calling 0207 7747 2860.
