PARTNERSHIP Italy - UK
PARTNERSHIP | Winter 2019 02 | THE PRESIDENT’S PERCEPTION Dear readers, With the ongoing twists and turns in the seemingly endless saga about whether the UK will leave the EU with or without a withdrawal agreement, Brexit will undoubtedly pose many challenges whatever the outcome. Ever optimistic, I want to focus on the positives and look to the future. As we move towards a new economic and political era of coexistence between the EU and the UK, we must be ready to assess and evaluate the challenges that inevitably will come with change, and respond with pragmatic and targeted solutions. Our goal must be to maintain and build upon our already robust business relationship with the UK. Another area that is making daily headline news is the environment and the understandable concern surrounding the unprecedented global climate emergency. This leads me to the ICCIUK Annual Conference, which just took place. The theme this year was Energy & the Environment: Circular Economy. The focus was on systems aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources. Our eminent speakers from government agencies and sector related industry addressed the audience on a broad range of areas including renewable energy, climate change, sustainability and the economy. As I write, demonstrations are taking place a stone’s throw away frommy office as protestors descend towards parliament in order to encourage the government to deal with the issues of climate change. It is a theme of global importance – for industry, politics and most importantly for our future generations. I am proud that as a Chamber we are highlighting this issue. The more it is in the spotlight, the more people will sit up and take notice. Many drops make an ocean.
